Today food safety is a priority for the government of every country. Also, the Covid Pandemic has brought the Global Food System in Limelight. The virus emerged from an uncontrolled food supply chain hence arising questions on consumer’s mind about Food Safety, they want to know more about Ingredients?, Supply chain hazards?, Testing?, Food Certifications? Farmer welfare? etc…
If you see the current scenario: Covid 19 has brought the entire world on standstill. But it has also forced people to reflect on life and their priorities. Good health is the top priority for every human being today. Health is nothing but a reflection of what you eat and your lifestyle. Consumers are strongly demanding for Quality and Safe Food. 80% of the population today are demanding Transparency and interested to know “The Story Behind The Product”. They want to safeguard themselves and avoid any kind of health issues arising due to food which they can control versus situations like natural disasters, epidemics, pandemics, bioterrorism etc which are beyond their control.
On the other side, our population is exploding at an uncontrollable rate and hence the demand for food. But our agricultural food production is not accelerating at the same speed. Today we produce enough food to feed everybody on our planet provided we control the waste and have a fair distribution system. Be it the developed or developing countries the global agricultural food system is facing huge challenges at all levels be it the Farmers, the Suppliers, Retailers or the Consumers. A support system for farmers is the need of the hour. They are badly exploited and have a meagre income not sufficient to even meet the basic needs of their own family.
We need to take an immediate and purposeful action to bring more Safe food with Transparence and Sustainability. A system which will support the farmers, increase their incomes, support them with better education and technology. On the other side make sure the food reached the market where the consumers are more interested to know the story behind the product, ensuring them good health and protecting them from complications arising due to food.
